After announcements of a potential global outbreak of the Zika virus, Kenya have said they may pull out of the Rio Olympics this year.

The chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee told the Kenyan Standard Newspaper that if the Zika virus reaches a serious level, they will not be attending the games.

However, according to the Brazilian Minister for Sport, people should not refrain from travelling to Brazil during the games.

“Concerted actions by the federal, state and municipal governments to combat the Zika virus and the actions taken by the Rio 2016 Committee, along with national engagement against the mosquito, will ensure the effective fight against Aedes aegypti, the transmitter of the virus.”

They add that the games will be hosted during the winter, which typically has low rainfall and mosquito breeding.
